Requisition ID req21660 Working Title Supv,Custodial Services Position Grade 09 Position Summary

The Custodial Supervisor performs responsible supervisory work involving the assignment and direct supervision of custodial employees in maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of Johnson Center and Seidler Natatorium to include, offices, classrooms, fitness centers including exercise equipment, locker rooms, restrooms, gymnasiums, pools, laboratories, furnishings and equipment as well as building entrances, hallways and exterior walkways. The Custodial Supervisor is also responsible for training new employees in proper custodial procedures for the use of manually operated tools, electrically-powered machines, cleaning compounds, solvents and chemicals. It is expected that the Custodial Supervisor will also perform the same cleaning duties in the event of employee absence, vacant positions, special events or excessive need. This responsibility will remain in place until the situation is remedied. Able to work or conduct meetings and training during the day and night shifts.

Supervises personnel which typically includes recommendations for hiring, firing, performance evaluation, training, work allocation, and problem resolution.

Estimates job costs, and develops and implements cost-cutting procedures; reviews work orders and orders necessary supplies, chemicals and materials.
Maintains records on employees, equipment, and maintenance activities; plans and coordinates custodial projects, as needed.
Organizes and allocates workloads to ensure balance and that deadlines are met; schedules work assignments in order of priority and date received.
Supervises the ordering, care, maintenance, and utilization of department equipment, supplies, keys, and inventories.

Inspects work areas to ensure consistency and quality of work and adherence to established procedures, safety regulations, and infection control standards.
Ensures adherence to established University and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, and safety standards.
Trains employees on cleaning and equipment techniques, methods, and procedures.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.


Conditions of Employment
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of cleaning and custodial supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
  • Knowledge of planning and scheduling techniques.
  • Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to supervise and train assigned staff.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Ability to observe, assess, and record work, safety and infection control standards.
  • Knowledge of cost analysis techniques.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Employee development and performance management skills.
  • Ability to perform complex tasks and to prioritize multiple projects.
