The Division of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Preventive Medicine, within the Department of Internal Medicine, is seeking a Data Scientist to support the design and analysis of research studies in UNMHSC. The successful candidate will have expertise in data management and analysis using software package such as R or SAS; experience in electronic medical record database, database software such as SQL, data quality control, and design and analysis of clinical research studies. The Division of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Preventive Medicine has a robust research portfolio that includes research studies based on randomized controlled trials, observational studies, and large administrative databases to address a broad variety of health services and other research questions. The Division maintains close ties to many UNM Health Sciences Center departments, centers, and colleges. There extensive opportunities for carrying out research in collaboration with other HSC programs and in areas including cardiology, neuroscience, nephrology, environmental health, and health service research.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Provide biostatistical support to division members and their affiliates. Collaborates with stakeholders and subject matter experts to understand institutional needs; identifies relevant data sources for information.

2. Conduct appropriate statistical analysis under the supervision of faculty biostatisticians.

3. Design, test, implement, and document statistical computer programming in high level statistical software packages, including SPSS, SAS and R. Develops, tests, trains, and implements models; continuously refines models based on performance and outcome and operationalizes feasible solutions.

4. Utilize advanced techniques to access large databases and create statistical datasets to address research questions. Captures, mines, manages and analyzes big data sets using state-of-the-art techniques, such as natural language processing, cluster analysis, image analysis, pattern recognition, predictive modeling, visualization, and/or other applicable methods.

5. Develop, document, and maintain analytic data files. Processes, cleanses, and verifies the integrity and reliability of data used for analysis; uses iterative processes and validates findings.

6. Establish and maintain appropriate data collection and storage systems, programs, and procedures for building analytic data systems.

7. Participate in research report writing and developing research proposals.

8. Participate in team meetings and contribute to the development and review of study protocols.

9. Participate in internal research and quality control activities.

10. Captures, mines, manages and analyzes big data sets using state-of-the-art techniques, such as natural language processing, cluster analysis, image analysis, pattern recognition, predictive modeling, visualization, and/or other applicable methods.

11. Use machine learning techniques to develops, tests, trains, and implements models. Researches, examines and develops mathematical, statistical and/or machine learning models to predict outcomes, which may include the use of linear regression models, decision trees, random forest, and other applicable methods; models and frames scenarios that affect critical organizational processes and/or decisions.

12. Master statistical modeling techniques such as decision trees, random forest, and Bayesian inferences, causal inferences. Selects features for data mining, which may include building and optimizing classifiers using machine-learning techniques; explores, examines, and extracts data from multiple internal and external data sources to find hidden insights and correlations.

13. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a relevant field; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • MS in statistics, applied statistics or closely related field
  • Experience performing statistical analysis of biomedical and health data
  • Experience using R, SAS in statistical data management and analysis
  • Experience writing, testing, implementing, and documenting statistical computer software programs
  • Experience using large databases, including EHR/EMR, data processing, and creating analytic datasets suitable for analysis
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage time to complete multiple simultaneous projects
  • Ability to effectively communicate, orally and in writing, analytic results to clinicians and the study team
  • Knowledge and experience in informatics techniques (i.e. machine learning)
