Position Summary & Duties Responsible

POSITION SUMMARY
Under the supervision of assigned supervisor performs a variety of journey-level, skilled plumbing tasks supporting the repair and maintenance of the Bernalillo County buildings and facilities. Troubleshoot, repair, replace or take other corrective action to maintain plumbing fixtures, accessories and equipment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Troubleshoot and repair major plumbing breakdowns such as clogged sewers, drains and fixtures.
  2. Inspect, repair, and install boiler controls; evaluate water levels, pressure, and temperature.
  3. Calculate the correct sizing for installation of piping and fixtures.
  4. Determine routing of pipe, sequence of operation and location of plumbing fixtures, accessories and equipment.
  5. Inspect, repair and install gas lines and fixtures, steam lines, back-flow prevention devices and pipes.
  6. Maintain and repair a wide variety of central-air systems.
  7. Test and maintain sprinkler and fire pump equipment.
  8. Inspect, repair, and maintain vacuum equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High school diploma or GED, plus four (4) years of plumbing experience.
  2. Licensed journeyman in plumbing and gas-fitting.
  3. Knowledge of plumbing practices and procedures.
  4. Knowledge of back-flow device installation and repair.
  5. Knowledge of fire protection systems.
  6. Knowledge of central air systems.
  7. Basic mathematical principles.
  8. Skilled in interpreting and reading blueprints, diagrams and plans.
  9. Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.
  10. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  11. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Supplemental Information

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
The offer of this Bernalillo County position requires compliance with the following:

  1. Employee must successfully complete the post-offer employment medical examination.
  2. Employee must comply with the safety guidelines of the County.
  3. Employee must obtain back-flow prevention certification within one (1) year of employment or promotion and must maintain certification while employed as a Plumber.
  4. Employee must have a valid New Mexico driver's license by employment date and retain a valid NM driver's license while employed in this position.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  1. Duties are performed both indoors and outdoors.
  2. Indoor duties are performed in a temperature-controlled environment. While performing outdoor activities, worker is exposed to natural weather conditions that may be severe.
  3. Worker is exposed to occasional vibration and noise factors.
  4. Indoor duties are performed on an even surface, which may be carpet, tile or concrete. Indoor surfaces are typically dry. Outdoor duties may be performed on even or uneven surfaces, which may be dry or wet. Outdoor duties may be performed on gravel, or shingled roof. Climbing stairs, ladders and scaffolds, indoors or outdoors, is required.
  5. Worker is exposed to fumes/odors from the use of paint and chlorine. Worker may be exposed to dust and mists in the performance of certain outdoor duties.
  6. Potential work hazards include climbing of ladders and scaffolds, exposure to severe weather conditions, exposure to electrical wiring and currents, heavy lifting, working on rooftops, and working on potentially slick surfaces, in addition to working around power tools.
  7. Work may be performed at a correctional facility with exposure to noise, possible contact with inmates, and dangerous situations that could involve serious bodily injury and other health hazards.
EQUIPMENT, TOOLS AND MATERIALS
  1. Employee uses a wide variety of hand and power tools in the performance of duties.
  2. Equipment used by employee includes ladder, scaffold, tape measure, dolly, hoist, tool box, volts/ohm/amp meter, flashlight, keys, soldering torch, hydraulic lift, winches, cutting and braising torch.
  3. Supplies used by employee include electrical parts, appliance parts, and plumbing parts, fasteners of all types, adhesives, paints, solvents, gasoline, oil, and cleaning materials.
  4. Employee utilizes a filter mask when handling some hazardous chemicals.
