Position Title: Pipefitter

Location of Position: United States -- Wisconsin -- Sturgeon Bay

Position Type: Full-Time; Permanent; Non-Exempt

Reports To: Foreman

Position Summary: This position is responsible for pipefitter equipment, parts, interiors and exteriors of ships, and shipyard buildings at our vast, 63-acre facility.

Detailed Description:

  • Follows directions under intermittent supervision.
  • Cut, thread, or bend pipes to specifications.
  • Lay out full scale drawings of pipe systems, supports, or related equipment, according to blueprints.
  • Assemble or secure pipes, tubes, fittings, or related equipment, according to specifications, by welding, brazing, or threading joints.
  • Measure and mark pipes for cutting or threading.
  • Inspect, examine, or test installed systems or pipe lines, using pressure gauge, hydrostatic testing, observation, or other methods.
  • Plan pipe system layout, installation, or repair, according to specifications.
  • Attach pipes to walls, structures, or fixtures.
  • Modify, clean, or maintain pipe systems, units, fittings, or related machines or equipment.
  • Cut or bore holes in structures.
  • Install automatic controls to regulate pipe systems.
  • Shut off steam, water, or other gases or liquids from pipe sections, using valve keys or wrenches.
  • Remove and replace worn components.
  • Operate motorized pumps to remove water from flooded manholes, basements, or facility floors.
  • Diagnose and solve problems of all kinds.
  • Troubleshoot problems with all equipment as it arises.
  • Proper storage of equipment.
  • May be assigned miscellaneous tasks outside craft as required.
  • Attendance is an essential function of the job.
  • Ability and willingness to engage in highly energetic pursuits on the waterfront.

Physical Job Demands:

  • At least two times a day carry a 50lb bucket of tools and supplies to and from job site, including but not limited to, walking up to 500', climbing ladders / stairs, and crawling through 34" inner bottoms and through an 18"x24" lightening hole.
  • Occasionally carry 2" pipe to job site by lifting 36lbs from floor, carrying 100' and placing at 72".
  • At least once a day position welding feeders at the job site by lifting 50lbs from the floor, carrying for up to 100', up a flight of stairs, through 18"x24" lightening hole and over 36" frames.
  • Occasionally place elbows on pipe by lifting 50lbs from floor, carrying 100' including climbing stairs / ladder.
  • Occasionally utilize Chain Jack, Porta Pull, and Porta Power to position components for welding by lifting 48lbs from floor, hooking on a 72" pad eye, and pushing / pulling up to 150lbs of force.
  • Occasionally install flanges and valves by lifting 62lbs from the floor, carrying 50', placing at 40", and tightening nuts on bolts using a wrench.
  • Occasionally change shoe on bender by lifting 70lbs from 30", carrying 10', and placing at 40".
  • Occasionally take 2" water pump to job site by lifting 70lbs from floor, carrying 100', including climbing stairs / ladders, and placing on the floor.
  • At least one time a day lift hard coil and place on wire feed welder by lifting 50lbs coil of hardwire from floor, carrying 20', and placing at 75".
  • Regularly pull hoses to job site including climbing over framing with tooling to access job site by lifting 10lbs from the floor, stepping over 36" frames, walking 3', crawling through lightening holes, and walking 25' to site.
  • Utilize small tools to manipulate small parts for installation and/or repair by gripping / pinching with 10lbs of force.
  • Approximately two times a day pull 46lbs tools and equipment 50' up the side of the boat by using the hand of hand technique.
  • Frequently utilize Grinder / Torch / Welder, including in confined space, by lifting 14lbs from the floor, carrying 50', and pushing up to 20lbs of force overhead, while kneeling and lying in different positions including 34" inner bottoms.
