Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial and medical fields at a reasonable cost, going so far as to even waive tuition for certain eligible students. Located in Richlands, Virginia, SWCC offers associate's degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university. SWCC also has associate's degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography and Administration of Justice.

Southwest Virginia Community College is seeking a candidate to fill a faculty role for the Registered Nursing Program. The assigned location for this position will be Southern Gap Logistics Center located in Grundy, VA. The position reports directly to the Dean of Health Technologies and indirectly to the Vice President of Academic and Student Services at Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC). This is a full-time, nine-month teaching position. Reappointment will be based on performance evaluations and institutional needs.

The primary responsibility of a member of the teaching faculty in the Virginia Community College System shall be to provide quality instruction for the students. At SWCC, the major emphasis shall be on excellent teaching by working with students in classrooms and/or laboratories, through individual conferences, various distance education media, and related activities. Our goal is to help students develop their own interests and abilities to the fullest capacity in order to become better employees and better citizens.

Responsibilities:
  • Teach Fundamentals, Medical/Surgical Nursing, Obstetrics, Psychiatric, Geriatric, Maternal and Pediatric Nursing in the classroom and clinical environments.
  • Advise students on curriculum and career goals.
  • Work with other SWCC faculty members to develop and evaluate curriculum/courses as required.
  • Establish and assess student learning outcomes and participate in Institutional Effectiveness initiatives to include assessment and program reviews.
  • Integrate concept-based nursing education principles.
  • Teach courses via distance learning media.
  • Maintain ten office hours per week.
  • Serve on college/program committees.
  • Participate in college, community and professional activities.
  • Pursue professional growth and development activities in his/her discipline(s).
  • Perform other such duties as may be deemed appropriate.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty & staff and other stakeholders important to the college.

Other duties shared by teaching faculty include participation in reaccreditation efforts, student advising, student activities, sponsorship of student organizations, supervision of work-study students, college service activities, professional development activities, and community service.
Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Current unrestricted or multistate license to practice as a registered nurse in Virginia;
  • Master's degree in Nursing required;
  • Two years recent, related clinical experience required;
  • Candidates must be proficient in oral and written communication in the English language;
  • Proficient with computer technology, including use of a PC and relevant software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty & staff and other stakeholders important to the college required;
  • An acceptable background check for the successful candidate is also required.
Additional Considerations
  • Knowledge of Canvas, Zoom, Instructional Syllabi, Navigate and Outlook a plus
  • Successful teaching experience at the community college level
